Two of the most popular exercise in the United States are running or jogging and walking. Both require relatively little preparation and almost no investment in accessories, with a pair of sneakers and comfortable clothing is sufficient.
Both running and walking are good ways to burn calories and help improve health and keep us in line, but which of the two gives you better results? This is a question often repeated and difficult to get a precise answer, and although they have done and continue to do studies, the conclusion depends on many factors, including what you want to achieve and the specific conditions of each person.
However, the results of a study that was recently published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise , the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine, seems to tip the balance in favor of running, if you want to achieve is to lose weight .
In a survey of more than 15,000 walkers and more than 32 000 runners, participants were asked to waist measurements, weight, their diets and distances ran or walked each week, and six years later they returned to ask the same questions. Runners kept thinner than those who walked, and the difference was more marked in people over 55 years.
The reason seems to go beyond the amount of calories burned, as with the two types of exercise can burn the same, even if it means walking a lot more to spend the same as is spent running, but it seems that those at the regularly tend to control more of what they eat, through increased presence in the blood of the hormone peptide YY, which apparently reduces appetite.
So you know if you want to lose weight, it pays to pick up the pace to hold off the pounds longer.
